The highest sulfate-resistant grade in the ASTM classification — C₃A ≤5%. Engineered for coastal foundations, marine structures, underwater tunnels and sewage works exposed to severe sulfate environments.
Type V Portland cement is the highest sulfate-resistant grade available in the ASTM C150 classification. With C₃A content capped at just 5%, it is specifically engineered for extreme sulfate-exposure environments where ordinary Portland cement and even Type II would fail prematurely.
In environments where sulfate concentrations in soil or groundwater exceed 1,500 ppm (or 1.5% by mass in soil), the destructive reaction between sulfate ions and the calcium aluminate hydrates of normal cement happens fast enough to compromise structural integrity within years rather than decades. Type V cement, with its strict C₃A limit, effectively starves this reaction of its primary reactant — extending service life by orders of magnitude in aggressive environments.
The price of high sulfate resistance is slightly lower early strength. Because C₃A contributes significantly to 1–7 day strength development, Type V cement gains strength somewhat more slowly than Type I or Type II. The 28-day strength remains fully comparable, but formwork stripping schedules and post-tensioning timelines may need to be adjusted accordingly.
Type V is mandated by code in many coastal and marine applications, sewage treatment plants, and chemical-industry installations. In the Gulf region in particular, the combination of high-sulfate groundwater and coastal salinity makes Type V the default specification for major infrastructure projects.

Required when soil or groundwater sulfate concentrations exceed 1,500 ppm SO₄ or 1.5% in soil, as per ACI 318 recommendations.
Seawater and sea air contain sulfate compounds. Type V ensures long-term concrete durability in ports, offshore platforms, and coastal foundations.
Sewage contains biogenic H₂SO₄ and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Type V cement provides essential resistance for long service life in these environments.
Chemical plants and industrial floors exposed to sulfate-containing effluents, fertilizer storage, or process chemicals benefit significantly from Type V.
